Erskine Bridge Pipeline Replacement

Catagory: Groundwater Control

Location: Glasgow, Scotland

Client: Scotland Gas Networks

Sector: Energy & Utilities

SGN were replacing two 300mm diameter pipelines, which required microtunnelling beneath the railway at Kilpatrick Station.

Due to unexpected ground conditions, the reception shaft construction methodology had to be altered, requiring careful groundwater management within tight site constraints and with zero net abstraction from the aquifer.

OGI Involvement

OGI were engaged to design a groundwater control solution that would enable safe and efficient construction of the reception shaft.

The system needed to minimise drawdown below sensitive adjacent infrastructure, such as the live railway line and bridge piers, and have zero net abstraction from the aquifer.

OGI’s involvement included extensive coordination with stakeholders including the environmental regulator (SEPA) and critical asset owners. Extensive modelling was required to demonstrate that the groundwater control system would not impact on adjacent structures.

Solution

The groundwater control system comprised a series of deep submersible pumping wells surrounding the reception shaft to lower the water table and piezometric pressures, combined with recharge wells around the perimeter of the site to reinject 100% of abstracted groundwater.

This was supported by a robust groundwater monitoring and settlement monitoring operation, to ensure the groundwater control system was operating in line with expectations and to identify any risks at an early stage.

The micro-tunnel reception shaft was constructed successfully and the monitoring system demonstrated zero settlement at the railway line and bridge piers.
